Pajamas
Best Pajamas for Women
If you want to treat yourself (or someone special) to exceptional PJs, start here. We tried on 27 pajama sets and pants for women and men—with as many inclusive sizes as we could find—and spent about a month sleeping in them to find eight styles we love. Each stands out in comfort and quality, with styling that keeps the wearer looking put together, even when they’re lounging on the couch.
Our picks include a a classic women’s piped jersey set, luxe silk pajamas for women, women’s lounge pants with true inclusive sizing, winsome printed long johns, flannel sets for women and flannel pants for men, and sweatpants for everyone. Most, but not all, are available in extended sizing, and our Competition section has several other options for diverse body types. As a staff writer on Wirecutter’s sleep team, I’ve written our guides to robes, flannel sheets, duvet covers, blankets, and many other categories. With more than a decade of sewing experience, including published quilt patterns, I know a lot about textiles, and I can find the comfiest, coziest fabrics for sleeping and lounging. I’m also a plus-size woman, so inclusive sizing and flattering fits are essential to me, and they became central to this guide.
I emailed with Cora Harrington, author of In Intimate Detail: How t
o Choose, Wear, and Love Lingerie, and the founder and editor of The Lingerie Addict. She told me how to care for silk, and she gave me some general insight into how clothes are fit and scaled to different sizes. I talked to several Wirecutter staff members about what they sleep in and the brands they love, and I interviewed a Nordstrom personal shopper about pajamas. To find pajamas and pants to test, I read owner reviews, searched for brands that carried extended sizes, and used Instagram to find more. I also read articles from The Strategist, Racked, The Cut, and GQ. After learning that many extended sizes are sold only online, and hearing from people who prefer to try things on in a store, I called several stores to find out what sizes they carried.
